What is Better Alamance Timebank?
The Better Alamance Timebank is a free platform that allows community members to exchange services with one another. It allows users to request and offer services while gaining and spending time credits as an alternative to currency.
Credits are earned in hourly increments by performing services – such as an hour of dog-walking – for other members of the community, which can then be spent by “purchasing” skills from other members – such as an hour of home repair.
How did the Better Alamance Timebank begin? Who is in charge of monitoring exchanges?
The project is a culmination of the student efforts in a course at Elon University titled “Building Better Communities through Civic Technology.” Currently, students in the class are in charge of monitoring the users enrolled and maintaining the website. The timebank runs on the basis of trust between community members, and before making an exchange, reviews from other users can be read to affirm that the user has already completed past tasks successfully.
Do I qualify to register?
Better Alamance Timebank was created to serve members of Alamance County. Whether you travel here for work, to visit family, to attend school in the area or are a permanent resident, Better Alamance Timebank is a platform by the community for those involved with the community.
I am looking for one specific service. How do I find an offer?
On the top of the site you can find a search bar directly below the heading of the page. If you are looking for a babysitter, typing babysitting here.
All relevant offers will show up in the results.
There is also an option to limit the service by distance found next to the Offers heading on the same page.
I registered for Better Alamance Timebank but now it won’t let me log in. What’s wrong?
We care about our community, and want to make sure that everyone who uses Better Alamance Timebank feels safe contacting other users. To ensure your security, all registrations have to be approved by our administrative team before the account is activated. This may take a couple of days. You will be notified via email when your registration is processed.
I don’t feel comfortable sharing all of my personal information. What will other users be able to see?
Users will be able to view your contact information (either email, phone number, or both depending on which options you choose), the services you offer and the requests you make. In addition, your profile picture, the number of service exchanges, and your account traffic will be visible. Account traffic is made up of page visits—how many users visit your bio page—and search hits.
After services are exchanged you will be able to view feedback from other users, which will be public. For example:
Jane Doe has had 4 exchanges with 3 different members.
Jane Doe provided 2 times and 100% of those receiving were satisfied.
Jane Doe responded when emailed 2 \ 2.
This website isn’t in my first language. Are there other language options?
On the bottom right of the site there is a language dropdown list.
My question isn’t on this list. Who should I contact?
Please feel free to contact administrative staff through the Better Alamance facebook page. Direct messages or wall posts will be answered as soon as possible.
